More from Meta earnings call on AI:

i think meta strategy to open source makes so much sense. If the chatgpt model was copied and stolen, it would destroy chatgpt and much of azure openai revenue. If bard model was stolen, it would harm their GCP ai revs, and crucially, their ad revs if a non ad based competitor sneaked in to search (like arc). But facebook is based around their community. Even if someone copied a super dooper proprietary facebook ai model, it would not really harm their community nor their existing ad insights model as the community they have established is a unique barrier to entry. And open sourcing the ai might also be a way of potentially harming your biggest competitors. Dunno, it seems like a smart move of expanding their own ai capabilities massively.

So your thinking is that:

1) Open sourcing it means the community contributes which means they can expand their own AI capabilities growing and improving their community
2) It messes up their competitors

I think that is the best argument I've heard especially 1)

i wonder if they will still have this same strategy two years down the line, you cant help but feel they were caught out a little by chatgpt as YLC was far more interested in alts to transformers.
